What is Nuclear Medicine?
Nuclear medicine uses trace amounts of radioactive material to diagnose disease. Radiopharmaceuticals are injected into veins and are detected by a special type of camera that works with computers to provide very precise pictures of the area being imaged.
The Nuclear Medicine Department at CAMIS focuses on outpatient studies in order the assist the Red Deer Regional Hospital accommodate acute and cardiac patients. We provide, on patients over the age of 13 years, Bone scans, HIDA (Hepatobiliary) scans, RBC liver scans (Hemangioma), MUGA (heart scan), Thyroid scans, Parathyroid scans, Dacrocystogram scans, Sentinel Node scans (breast) and Miraluma (breast) scans.
